What Are the Biggest Personal Branding Mistakes?

The biggest personal branding mistakes are trying to appeal to everyone, rebranding every quarter, copying whoever is loud, outsourcing your opinions and chasing followers instead of buyers. I see the same handful of errors in almost every owner who comes to me, and none of them are talent problems. They are patience and specificity problems, and both are fixable.

Trying to appeal to everyone

When you write for everyone you sound like no one, and buyers scroll straight past voices that sound like no one. Being specific filters for better clients, because the people who recognise themselves in your content often arrive half sold before they ever speak to you. The fear is that narrowing your message shrinks your market. In my experience it does the opposite of what owners expect, because the generalist gets ignored and the specialist gets remembered. Pick the client you actually want and write to that one person.

Rebranding every quarter and quitting at week three

Content compounds rather than spikes, so this month's videos keep working for you long after you filmed them, but only if they stay attached to a brand that still exists. Every quarterly rebrand resets that compounding to zero, and quitting at week three does the same thing with less paperwork. In my experience owners quit because the system needed them daily, not because they ran out of things to say. Batch your filming, keep the schedule modest, and remember that consistency beats frequency.

Copying whoever is loud this month

Whoever is loud this month is running a playbook built on their personality, their offer and their audience, and none of those are yours. Copy the format if you like, formats are just containers, but copy the persona and you become an impression of a person rather than a person. People remember someone, not information, and they certainly do not remember a copy of someone. The loud thing changes next month anyway, and the copiers change with it, which is exactly why nobody remembers them.

Outsourcing your opinions instead of your production

I sell done-for-you content, so weigh what I am about to say knowing that. Outsource the filming, the editing, the scheduling and the distribution, because production is a system and systems can be run by other people. Never outsource the opinions. When a ghostwriter invents your point of view, your audience builds a relationship with someone who does not exist, and the first real conversation exposes the gap. Your take on your industry is the one input only you can supply.

Posting announcements and counting followers

Announcements are content about you, and nobody wakes up caring about you. The things that feel obvious to you are the expert material your audience actually wants, so teach those instead of posting that you attended a conference. Stop treating follower counts as the goal while you are at it. A small audience that remembers you when they are ready to buy is worth more than a large one that scrolls past, because being remembered by buyers is the entire point.

When you should not hire anyone, including me

If you have not yet formed opinions you would defend in an argument, do not hire anyone, and that includes me. An agency can multiply a point of view, but it cannot invent one that survives contact with a real client. The same goes if your business cannot handle more enquiries, or if what you actually want is for someone else to be you online. Write badly in your own words first, work out what you believe, and then bring in help with the production.

Quick answers

Common questions

What is the single biggest personal branding mistake?

Trying to appeal to everyone. A message written for everyone recognises no one, so no one feels it is for them. Narrowing who you speak to feels risky, but it is what helps the right buyers remember you, and remembered is most of the way to chosen.

Should I rebrand if my personal brand is not working?

Usually not. Content compounds rather than spikes, and a rebrand resets that compounding to zero, so serial rebranders keep restarting a race they never let themselves finish. Before you rebrand, check whether the real problem is that you stopped posting, drifted off message or never picked a specific audience.

Can I outsource my personal brand?

You can outsource the production, meaning the filming, editing and scheduling, and I would argue you should once the workload is slowing you down. You cannot outsource the opinions. If someone else invents your point of view, your audience meets a fictional person, and the gap shows the moment they speak to the real you.

Do follower counts matter for a personal brand?

Not as a goal. The purpose of a personal brand is to be remembered by the people who might buy from you, and a modest audience of buyers is worth more than a large audience of scrollers. Chase being remembered, not being counted.

Why do people give up on personal branding so quickly?

In my experience the system needed them every day, and anything that needs you daily eventually loses to a busy week. Batching your filming and keeping the schedule modest removes that daily dependence. Consistency beats frequency, and quitting is usually a design problem rather than a discipline problem.
