Personal brand or company brand?
Owners ask this as though they have to choose. They do not, but the order matters, and getting the order wrong is expensive.
Personal first, company underneath
For an owner operated business, the personal brand moves faster. People follow people. A face gets attention that a logo has to pay for, and trust transfers from a person to a company far more easily than the other way round.
The company brand still matters. It is what makes you look like a business rather than a freelancer, and it is what has value if you ever sell. So the usual answer is both, with the founder out front and the company doing the convincing once someone arrives.
What each one is actually good at
The personal brand creates demand
Attention, opinions, being remembered. It works because people can disagree with a person in a way they cannot disagree with a brand account, and disagreement is memorable.
The company brand converts it
Case studies, process, proof, the sense that this will still function if you are on holiday. This is what someone checks after they have decided they like you.
The personal brand is cheaper
A founder talking about what they know costs a filming session. Building recognition for a logo without a face behind it usually costs media spend.
The company brand is transferable
It survives you. That matters for hiring, for stepping back, and for anything that ends in a sale, which is the one real argument for not going all in on the founder.
Building everything around one face
If every client comes because of you personally, you have built a job with staff. The business becomes harder to step back from and harder to sell, because the demand is attached to a person who is not part of the asset.
That is a real risk and worth naming, since I sell the thing that creates it. It is also manageable.
- →Make sure the offer and the delivery stand up without you in the room.
- →Put other people in the content as the team grows, so the trust spreads.
- →Keep the company's own proof current, so somebody can be convinced without meeting you.
- →Own your accounts and your footage, so the audience is an asset rather than a rental.
How the two run together
Publish as yourself. Point at the company for delivery. The founder's content earns attention and the company's site, case studies and process turn that attention into work.
That is how this site and Get Known are set up, deliberately. My name carries the opinions, the agency carries the work. If you are working out whether to hand any of it over, there is more in do my own content or hire someone, and on the timeline in how long this takes.
