Decision guide

Should I do my own content or hire someone?

I sell the hiring option, so weight this accordingly. I have still written the version I would want if I were the one deciding, including the cases where doing it yourself is obviously right.

The short answer

It is not a skill question, it is a consistency question

Almost every owner can make one good video. The ones who get known are the ones still posting in month nine. So the honest test is not whether you could do it. It is whether you have, over a stretch long enough to count.

If you have started three times and stopped three times, that is your answer, and it is not a discipline failure. It usually means the system needed you daily, and nothing that needs a business owner daily survives a busy quarter.

Do it yourself if

The case for keeping it in house

  • You are early and still working out what you actually think. Nobody can shortcut that part for you.
  • You have genuine hours. Not hours in theory, hours that survive a week where two clients blow up.
  • You enjoy it. That sounds soft, and it is the single best predictor of whether it lasts.
  • Money is tight. Doing it badly and consistently beats doing it well for one month and stopping.

If that is you, do not hire anyone. Post for ninety days first, then decide with evidence instead of intention.

Hire if

The case for handing it over

  • You have already proved you will not keep it up. Repeated evidence beats good intentions.
  • An hour inside your business is worth more than an hour in an editing timeline.
  • The bottleneck is production, not ideas. You know what to say and it never gets made.
  • You want it batched. One session covering weeks is a different commitment to filming daily.
The thinking has to be yours. The filming, editing and posting never had to be.
The real cost

Count the whole chain, not the filming

Most owners budget for the part they can picture, which is standing in front of a camera. Then they meet the rest of it.

Deciding

What to make this week, and whether it is worth making at all. Harder than filming, and the part that gets skipped first.

Editing

Where self-run content usually dies. Footage piles up, nothing goes out, and the momentum quietly ends.

Publishing

Unglamorous and relentless. It only works if it happens on the days it is supposed to, in weeks when you would rather not.

Once you have the real number of hours, compare it to what an agency costs. I have written about that separately in what personal branding costs in Australia.

Neither, actually

When the answer is do nothing yet

Sometimes content is not the problem. If you cannot service the work you already have, if you cannot explain your offer in one sentence, or if your last handful of leads went cold for reasons that had nothing to do with visibility, more content just makes an existing problem louder.

Fix the bottleneck first. It is cheaper, it is faster, and everything you build afterwards works better. There is more on this in how to choose an agency and in what an agency actually does.

Not sure which one you are?

Book a content audit. We look at where you stand, what your market is publishing, and whether this is worth doing for you at all. If the answer is do it yourself, I will tell you that.
